Electronic Recycling

Have old electronics lying about, collecting dust, but don't want to just toss them because of the hazardous chemicals? Well there's a new pilot program in Arkansas that will help with that!

Check out Project Green-Fed, a joint project of UNICOR and the ADEQ.

UNICOR and the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality are pleased to announce “PROJECT GREEN-FED”, an e-scrap recycling program for all Arkansas residents at zero cost.

“PROJECT GREEN-FED” is a simple, safe and convenient program. This one year pilot project will provide a cost effective, environmentally sound, e-scrap recycling program covering the entire state of Arkansas that meets EPA guidelines of material management.

The National Safety Council estimates that within the next five years, more than 250 million computers will become obsolete and will need to be disposed of properly. Land-filling and discarding this equipment improperly is harmful to the environment and many states do not allow electronics in landfills today. UNICOR’s Recycling Business Group and the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), have teamed to ensure the success of “PROJECT GREEN-FED”.

Private residents that want to recycle their obsolete computer equipment should call: 866-896-8528.

UNICOR will ship residents a box, packing material, and a return label at no charge.

After the computer equipment is packed, residents will call Federal Express for a pick up from their home...at no charge to the resident.

Federal Express will deliver the packed material to UNICOR who will recycle it properly in their ISO-9001:2000 Certified recycling facility.

UNICOR and ADEQ are seeking additional partners for “PROJECT GREEN-FED” to expand services.

Based on the results of “PROJECT GREEN-FED” pilot, UNICOR plans to offer this service on a nationwide basis.

UNICOR accepts the following items:
Cell Phones
Computers
Fax Machines
Laptops
Monitors
Peripherals
Power Supplies
Printers

I just ordered my boxes today, so we'll see how it goes. Also, on the online form there is a section for comments. I recommended adding things like DVD players, VCRs, and game systems. Maybe if you suggest it too, it'll push them in the direction of taking those items as well.
